In every school there is “top” crowd that sets the pace, while the others follow their lead. For example, if the crowd decides that it is smart to wear bright red sweaters, then very soon everybody is wearing bright red sweaters.

There is nothing wrong with that, except the fact that for some people bright red sweater is really unsuitable.

The situation can even become dangerous, if the top crowd decides that it is smart to drink and to drive cars at seventy miles an hour. Then the people who follow the lead are endangering their lives. They are like the sheep being led to the slaughter(屠杀).

Now it’s possible that you have come across situations like these more than once in your life. In fact you probably did something you knew to be wrong one time or another. Though the misfortune(不幸)happened to him, he grew into a handsome boy. Yet he felt ashamed when he communicated with others.

“You should get in touch with other young people,” his mother told him, with a kindness in her heart. The boy’s father talked with the family doctor about his ears. “Could nothing be done?” the father asked. “I believe I could give him a pair of outer ears, if they could be got,” the doctor replied.

Two years went by. One day, his father said to the son, “You are going to the hospital, Son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need, but it’s a secret.” The operation is a big success. Later he married and entered the diplomatic(外交的)service. I find it annoying(恼人的)and funny when I think about how we use protective or decorative wrappings(装饰性包装)in this country.

When I come home from the supermarket and start to unpack, I am always shocked at the layers of wrappings we cover our food with.

There is hardly anything we buy that doesn’t come in at least two wrappings, and then several of them are gathered by the shop assistant and put into a small bag. Then several of the small bags are grouped together and put into a big bag. If youhave several big bags with small bags in, they will give you a cardboard box to put thepackages-in-the-little-bags-in-the-bags in.

A lot of things we buy wouldn’t really need any protective wrappings at all. The skin

of an orange protects an orange pretty well for most of its natural life, but we aren’t satisfied with what nature has given it. We wrap them in plastic(塑料) or put them in a net bag, and then in a paper bag. The orange inside the skin, inside the plastic which is in the bag, must wonder where it is.

A box of biscuits often has waxed paper(蜡纸)next to the biscuits. A cardboard box holds the food with a decorative wrapping around it.

A relative(亲戚)of ours bought a new leather sofa recently because of the fine leather . She liked it so much that she didn’t want to get dirty, so she bought a cloth cover to put it over.

We may never again see the leather she’s protecting.

41. According to the author, the use of protective wrappings ____________.

    A. can be wasteful and unnecessary       B. make everything look funny

    C. gives people more work to do         D. is a practice against natural life

42. How does the writer feel when he unpacks the food from the supermarket?

A. Surprised.

B. Interested.

C. Frightened.

D. Excited.

43. What can be the best protective wrapping for the orange?

A. Plastic.

B. A net bag.

C. Its own skin.

D. A paper bag.

44. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refers to(所指)_________ .

    A. the food                           B. the waxed paper

    C. the cardboard box                   D. the decorative wrapping

45. What does the author think of his relative who bought a sofa?

    A. She should not buy a leather sofa.    B. She should not cover her sofa with a cloth.

    C. She should not allow the leather cover to get dirty.

    D. She should not forbid(禁止) the visitors to see the leather.

The are encouraged to   especially   be polite to in a low voice if necessary

relationship between student and teacher is less formal in the U.S.thanin manyother countries,   57   at the college level. When the teacher comes into the classroom, the students needn’t stand up. Students   58   ask questions during class, to go to the teacher’ s office for help after class, and to phone if they can’t go to school and need help with their lessons. Most teachers allow students to enter class late or leave early,  59  .

However, students are still asked to   60  their teacher and classmates and to be  honest during a test. When the teacher or a student is speaking to the class, it’s rude to talk to another classmate, even61  . When a test is being given, talking to a classmate is not only rude but also wrong. In the eyes of most American teachers, students who are talking to each other during a test are cheating(作弊).

五、阅读短文(共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分)

A)根据下面短文内容,在文章后第62~71小题的空格里填入适当的词语,并将答案填写在答题纸标号为62~71的相应位置上。注意:每空1词。

Nowadays in school life,a lot of students develop a fear of tests. It’s not because tests are something to be afraid of. Most students are afraid of tests mainly because they don’t have enough self-confidence and they don’t always think they are well prepared. If you follow the tips below, it’s not difficult to overcome(克服)your fear of tests.

People who know that they are not well-prepared are usually those who fear test most. However, most students don’t know when they are truly prepared for a test. As long as(只要)you know that you have studied well and long enough, you have reason to believe that you are well-prepared.

Be confident about yourself. Confidence before a test can bring about two things: either you fail the test and feel as if your confidence was unfounded(毫无根据)or you could actually do well in the test because of your confidence. Some students find that they experience the first result. However, this is only because those students might not have followed the first tip mentioned above. As long as you have studied well, you will be more confident of your chance to succeed in a test. If you feel as if you have not studied hard enough, then you will not be as confident as you should be.

Ask your teacher in advance(提前)about the material that is going to be covered in the test. In this way, you will know what you should prepare for and you can get confidence in the test. But you have to be brave enough to ask. Most students do not ask unless their teacher gives the information first, so make sure that you ask.

You should know that tests are only telling if you have got the knowledge, not how good or bad yourIQ is. So, even if you do badly in one test, you should know that there are other tests to come. As long as you think that there is another tomorrow, you can overcome your fear of a test. However, make sure that you are going to prepare well for the other tests.

Fear can be a problem in the process of achieving success. However, with the right attitude(态度) and preparations, you can overcome your fear of tests by using these tips.

Title:  62   to overcome your fear of tests

  63

B) 根据短文内容及首字母提示,填写所缺单词,并将答案填写在答题卡为72-81的相应位置上。

Many books have been written about “the art of giving”. But what about the art of

r  72? Sometimes, receiving a gift can be difficult, especially when someone buys you a gift you don’t want!

“I remember when I was about twelve years old, my parents b  73me a purple purse,” laughs GuoXiaojing. “It really made me feel embarrassed(尴尬), because I thought the purse was really ugly!Still, I pretended (假装)that I liked it b  74 I knew it would make my parents happy!”

Han Ling agrees. “That sounds like my grandparents!A few years ago, my grandparents gave me an orange sweater f  75  my birthday. I used to wear it every time I visited them, but when I left their house, I took it off! Of course, this made me feel g  76  . It was a very nice thought, but my grandparents have different taste from me! I think it’s hard to buy clothes or other personal things for people.”

To make things easier, some people would rather just give money. In some cultures, h  77, receiving money can make people uncomfortable. “When someone gives me money, it j   78    makes me think they’re being lazy,” says John Wilson. “In England, we have a saying: It’s the thought that counts. When s   79 gives me money, I feel they don’t think at all. I prefer to receive a gift that has some thought behind it. I don’t mind if it’s something I don’t need. If someone has thought about a g   80   for me, it always makes me happy.”

Different people have very different thoughts on this subject! So maybe the art of receiving is e  81more difficult than the art of giving! What do you think?
