We use alarm clocks every day in order to make sure we wake up on time. Alarm clocks used to be a simple product that shows the time and rings when set. Here we put together a list of cool alarm clocks which not only wake you up but also make you work for them.

Here is an alarm clock that requires some effort to turn it off. You must throw the hand grenade alarm clock away like a true grenade in order to stop the madness. This could truly be what people want when waking up tired. The only problem is…it won’t get you out of bed.

You want something that will make sure to get you out of bed? A carpet alarm clock will do. It will continue to ring until you step on it with your own two feet. Well, if you have kids, you could always scream at them to come into your bedroom and step on it for you…but that would seem a little more difficult.

This must be the best and cruelest way to get exercise…to battle with your alarm clock. It is a great and cool alarm clock that requires you to pick up the dumbbells in order to turn the ringing off and get back to sleep.

You may be a person that could easily get out of bed if you had the right kind of sounds, music or words. And this is what this MP3 alarm clock hopes to do by allowing you to set the rings with your favorite sounds. For some people it may be birds’ sweet sounds.

26.What is the new function(功能) of the alarm clocks?

How much paper do you use every year? Maybe you can’t answer this question quickly. In 1990 the world’s use of paper was about one kilogram for each person a year. Now most countries use as 50 kilograms of paper for each person in a year. But such countries likeAmerica, England and Sweden, use more paper than other countries.

Paper was first made in China about 2,000 years ago. It was made from the hair like parts of certain plants. Paper was not made in southern Europe until about the year 1100. In 1500, a German named Schaeffer found out that people could make the best paper from trees. After that the forest countries of Canada, Sweden, America, Finland became the most important ones in paper making.

When we think of paper, we think of newspapers, books and writing-paper. But there are many other uses. Only half of the paper is used for books and magazines. Paper is very good for keeping you warm. Houses are often insulated(隔绝冷或热) with paper.

You may see some people sleep on a large number of newspapers. They are insulating themselves from the cold. In Finland sometimes the temperature is 40 degrees centigrade below zero. The farmers wear paper boots in the snow. Nothing could be warmer.

Each year more and more things are made of paper. We have had paper cups and plates for a long time. Now we hear that chairs, tables and even beds can be made of paper. With paper boots and shoes, you can wear paper hats, paper dresses and paper raincoats. When you have used them once, you throw them away and buy new ones.

People have made paper boats, but they haven’t made paper planes or cars. Just wait—perhaps they will make planes or cars someday.

五、阅读填空(共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分)

A)阅读下面短文,根据所读内容,在文章后第62-71小题的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

注意: 每个空格只填一个单词。

In some English-speaking countries, people list the most popular names. In the United States, the three most popular names for girls are Emily, Emma and Madison. For boys, they are Michael, Joshua and Mathew. In Britain, parents are likely to name their little girl Grace, Jessica or Ruby and Jack, Thomas or Oliver will go for boys.

Parents select names for their children for some reasons. The names are always meaningful. For example, if parents name their daughter Joy, it means the parents wish their daughter to be joyful and bring joy to others. Ruby is also a girl’s name. It means red precious stones. Pearl has a similar meaning to Ruby. When parents give names like those to their daughter, we can guess they cherish(珍爱) their daughter and wish her to be beautiful in the future.

Next, parents often pick names that can be shortened so that they can speak to their kid in a personal way. For example, William is a popular name in English-speaking countries. William can be shortened to Will, Willy. The same is true of the favorite names for a girl. For example, Elizabeth can be shortened to Beth, Liza and Liz.

Another reason is that parents sometimes name their children after famous persons such as an actor, pop star or sports personality. David becomes a popular name in Britain because David Beckham is a famous football star all over the world.
